Show & Tell: Holding Other People's Babies

I was flipping through our family photos on Shutterfly this morning and was struck by how many pictures I have of Bruce and I holding other people's babies. For a big guy, Bruce looks completely natural holding even the tiniest of babies. He's never had that nervousness some guys get around infants; rather he snuggles and cuddles and cradles with the best of them. Nothing can undo me quite like seeing a big strong guy with a tiny child in his hands--but the heartache becomes profound when that person is my husband, and the infant he's holding seems so far away from being ours.

I've had moments when I've pretended that my sister's children were my own. Bruce and I took our 3-year-old nephew to see a play at the local junior high school a few months ago, and I made believe that we were there with our son. I can't describe the pleasure I felt holidng Parker in my lap during the play, and having him hold my hand while we explored the auditorium during intermission. I was so proud of him, and felt so dearly what it must be like to be his mommy on a daily basis. (Note to my sister and her husband: you are AMAZING parents and I'm definitely paying careful attention so that we'll be ready when our time comes!)

So here it is, for Show & Tell...a gallery of my husband and I holding other people's babies:

Beautiful photographs. I especially like the ones of you and your husband holding the little tiny babies. Thanks for sharing!

It's wonderful that your heart is so open. The few photos I've allowed of us with other people's babies in the past few years rarely picture genuinely happy expressions from me.

Good for you...hopefully you'll have your own gallery to share one day. :-) I, on the other hand, will run to the other side of the room to avoid holding a baby these days....

So true. We have our own collection of those pics.

You and DH are beautiful people, inside and out. Each photo shows your unselfish kindness and sensitivity. If only I did not know that you are really thinking in those pics. It all hurts so much.

This was a great post.

Hang in there,
E

You DO look like naturals. With babies and with kiddies.

My your days of pretending be coming to an end.

How lovely and bittersweet. And your hubby is definitely a natural!

Beautiful photographs! And you are so correct, your husband does look like a 'natural' around the babies. The last pic of you and a baby is really wonderful and also that of a small baby girl and your hubby wearing something like a blue cap.

Thanks so much, everyone! Such lovely comments. WiseGuy, the blue cap is head gear from my husband's wrestling days. He wrestled throughout high school and college, and had just found his head gear in the basement at his brother's house. His niece, Abby, was fascinated by it--I'm trying not to imagine the vast quantity of creepy crawly grossness she's encountering with her sweet little hand as she grabbed it!

Oh you are so so beautiful! My favorite pic is the very last one, it just looks like the perfect fit. I pray you will have a little one all your own very very soon.

These are all such bittersweet pictures. The part of our heart that is touched so easily with these little ones is the same part that can feel so broken knowing they aren't ours to keep. Hoping you have your very own collection of pictures so soon.

Yes, very natural! I can't wait to see pics of you and Bruce holding your own child.

Somehow, someday, hopefully soon.

Arms like that deserve a baby of their own!

Brenna, your smile is radiant!!! I still haven't held a baby since Vivian and Annemarie died- not sure when I'm going to do that. Keep saying that I have to hold my own living baby first...we shall see. I am hoping that 2009 brings wonderful joy for you and Bruce.

Lots of love,
E
